How it works
This is a shift cipher whose shift keeps changing. That is why letter frequency looks flat and nothing obvious jumps out. This one is Beaufort. The key: key GOLD. Like Vigenère reversed — subtract the letter from the key instead of adding. Encoding and decoding are the same move. Line the key GOLD up under the message and undo each letter's own shift. The opening letters come back as B E N. The answer was BENEATH THE THIRD ARCH.
